Volume 3 was confirmed at the Rooster Teeth panel at PAX Prime 2014, where creator and director Monty Oum stated that he planned to go into development of the next Volume right after he was done with Volume 2. The release of Volume 3 was postponed because of Oum's sudden passing in early 2015.[8] Weeks later, producer Gray Haddock announced that the series would continue, with Volume 3 premiering in 2015.[9] Chapter 1 was released for "sponsors" only on October 24, 2015, followed by the release on YouTube the following day.[10] Starting with Volume 3, the release day for new Chapters was changed from Thursday to Saturday, with a new release time of 10 am CST.[11] Before the release of Chapter 7, Gray Haddock announced that from this point on, RWBY would be incorporating darker and more mature elements to the story. He advised those responsible "for a very young viewer" to watch the episodes before deciding if they want to show them to a child.[12] Volume 3 concluded on February 13, 2016. This was the last volume in which Oum was credited as a writer.
The volume featured a slightly different release schedule to previous volumes, with Rooster Teeth FIRST members (formerly Sponsors) being able to watch the episode a full day earlier than the public. The weekly release time was also moved from Thursday evening to Saturday morning for FIRST members (Sunday morning for the public). Short 30 second previews for each episode, entitled "Coming Up Next on RWBY Vol. 3" were also uploaded on the preceding Wednesday of the week of an episode's release.
Volume 3 was released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 3rd, 2016. This release featured a movie version of the volume. This "Complete" version would be released to the Rooster Teeth website and YouTube in parts starting on October 7th, 2019.
Volume 3 was the first time RWBY went through a pre-production phase. This allowed the animators to work together and refine the animation style for the show. Volume 3 was also the first time a director, in this case Kerry Shawcross, was present for every mocap session and was also the first time every single scene in the volume was storyboarded.[2]
The volume, especially the sixth episode, entitled "Fall", has been widely noted as being a turning point in the series, adopting a darker tone and more mature subject matter. In response, producer Gray G. Haddock released a statement that viewer discretion was advised for future installments of the series, especially for younger audiences. Gray compared RWBY to Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars as being a multi-year spanning series that would mature as it continues.[5]
According to Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross, Jessica Nigri was so incredibly busy during the production of Volume 3 that they only had about 2 hours to record the entirety of her lines for the volume as Cinder Fall.[9]
Having become a viral hit in the cosplay and anime scenes, it was a great shock to fans when RWBY creator Monty Oum passed away in 2015. Rooster Teeth carries his legacy on in this engaging batch of twelve episodes that show more refinement and sophistication than prior volumes.
Shawcross showed off the new set for Volume 3, which will feature the Vytal Festival and combat tournament. The festival has been alluded to in the past two volumes, and the art for the event was officially shown at RTX. The center stage, which will feature the combat tournament, is a hexagon that can change biomes that create challenging scenarios for the contestants. Shawcross also showed off art work of food stands and vendors within the festival, likely for scenes that do not contain combat.
Two new characters where showed off, as well as their voice actors announced at the panel. The first was Winter Schnee, the older sister of Weiss Schnee. She will be voiced by Elizabeth Maxwell, who has a long list of voice acting credits to her resume. Next was Uncle Qrow, who has been referred to over the past two volumes. He will be voiced by Vic Mignogna, one of the most recognizable English voice actors in the world. 041b061a72
